Partnerships: Alibaba grabs the Berlin startup Data Artisans

The Berlin startup Data Artisans was officially bought by the Chinese online giant Alibaba. The goal now is to further improve the open-source software Apache Flink in its development.

Only recently we have reported on the rumors about the acquisition of Zalando by the Chinese company, now it has secured the Berlin startup Data Artisans. 90 million euros were invested in this. In an official averaging of the Group, Data Artisans is now mainly concerned with the development of the nimble project and open source big data solutions.

From the user to the owner

According to Data Artisans founder Kostas Tzoumas and Stephan Ewen, Alibaba has been among the users and supporters of the nimble community since 2016 and has contributed significantly to the codebase during this time.

Alibaba itself has its own open source community, which is run under the name Blink. This will provide the online giant as a sign of his good gesture to the German startup. According to Heise Online, the software is mainly used for search functions in the Group’s online platforms.

Flink was developed within the stratosphere research project at the TU Berlin. The goal of this open-source framework is the efficient and user-friendly processing of huge, continuous data streams within a company. Data Artisans has been taking care of the development of the software since 2014. According to personal information, the community is the fastest growing in the Apache software universe.
