Private brokers are investing million euros in startups

Last year, over 50 financing rounds attracted over 62 million euros to start-up companies via Baystartup’s investor network. The focus was on early stage investments.

42.7 million euros of the invested money came from venture capitalists, public investors and strategic investors. Private investors come to a stake of 20 million euros and are involved in a total of three quarters of the deals. The investor network comprises around 300 private and more than 100 institutional investors. In the financial year 2018, the investor network gained around 40 new business angels.

Successfully funded startups include companies such as Inveox, All3dp, Hofmann & Stirner and Let’s Yalla. The focus of Baystartup-brokered deals is in the early stages: 44 of the funded teams (88 percent) are younger than three years. 26 percent of the rounds of financing fall on the pre-seed phase, 52 percent on the seed phase and 22 percent on the Serie A. Business Angels were involved in 74 percent of deals.

“This shows that business angels are an essential part of early-stage financing and the importance of angel capital has increased over the years,” says Carsten Rudolph, CEO of Baystartup.

Aiwanger: “Will keep our startup activities at a high level in the future”

Overall, the financing rounds range between 50,000 and 6,000,000 euros. The highest investment by a business angel was just under 2 million euros.

“The topic is particularly interesting for entrepreneurs from the German middle class”, says Rudolph. The network is supported by the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs.

“We will continue to keep our Startup activities at a high level in the future. Offers supported by the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, such as those of Baystartup, make a significant contribution to providing young, innovative companies with access to capital and expertise, especially in the Bavarian regions, “says Bavaria’s Economics Minister Hubert Aiwanger.

“This is an important prerequisite for successfully establishing their business models on the market.”

The companies supported by Baystartup currently employ more than 13,100 people and generated a turnover of almost 1.4 billion euros in 2017. Successful Munich companies like Flixbus, Egym, Magazino, and Voxeljet were supported by Baystartup.
