Corporate Taxonomy, Categorization, And An API To Make It Easy

Categorization is the process of assigning one or more categories to a document. This can be tedious manually, however, with software this process is much easier. So, keep reading Corporate Taxonomy, Categorization, And An API To Make It Easy, we will tell you about IAB Tech Lab’s Content Taxonomy, a useful API for your company.

Corporate Taxonomies Are Really Important?

Yes, they are! Companies suffer financial losses as a result of improper information organization! So, we need taxonomies, and that was the magic word that emerged as the solution. Corporate taxonomies were also added because the context was an organization.

So, information is a fundamental component of a business; it is necessary for decision-making and the accomplishment of the goals and duties of an organization. Besides, the amount of information give by a worker can double every 18 months; in two years’ time, we get more information than ever before in human history. For example, an executive can receive 200 to 300 emails per day.

Categorization

The different existing methods can be seen as a continuum:

On one hand, are the intellectual (or manual) methods, through which a human agent analyzes a document and assigns it the categories that represent it.

On the other, there are automatic methods in which a computer application groups documents (clustering). They are based on pre-established similarity identification criteria, labels the groups (clusters) using categories extracted from the documents themselves, and organizes these categories hierarchical, alphabetical, etc. Automatic methods are based on statistical algorithms and/or natural language processing, and their application involves the integration of taxonomy development and categorization in a single process.

Between the two extremes are semi-automatic methods, which combine human intelligence and machine efficiency. The two most widely used variants are categorization based on search rules and categorization based on sets of exemplar or training documents.

In the first model, the system administrator creates a “masterful” search equation, which he links to one or more categories of the taxonomy and specifies the conditions that a document must meet. This is so the document gets a specific category or categories.

In the training model, the administrator selects the documents that, in an exemplary way, would correspond to a certain category. These documents are analyzed by algorithms and will result in a behavioral profile. All those documents that, analyzed using the same algorithm, present the same behavior profile as the exemplary documents will be automatically linked to a specific category.

Semi-automatic systems provide more relevant results than automatic ones and are more efficient than intellectual ones.

Corporate Taxonomy, Categorization, And An API To Make It Easy: Text Classification IAB Taxonomy

The Content Taxonomy has evolved over time to provide publishers with a consistent and easy way to organize their website content. For example, to differentiate “sports” vs. “news” vs. “wellness” material. IAB Tech Lab’s Content Taxonomy specification provides additional utility for minimizing the risk that content categorization signals could generate sensitive data points about things like race, politics, religion, or other personal characteristics that could result in discrimination.
