Taxonomy: Content Classification On Websites

A taxonomy is a structure consisting of a set of categories and subcategories. It allow ordering entities (things) based on some common characteristics of such entities.

For example, countries like Spain and France share the characteristic of being States of the European Union therefore, they can be ascribed to that category in a political geography taxonomy.

Music and Television share the characteristic of being cultural products, thus they are subcategories of the Culture category, etc.

Taxonomies can be useful for various purposes: from book organization in a library to ordering content on a website. The main virtue of taxonomy is clarity and this derives mainly from logical coherence, although it is not always easy to achieve. The main function of a taxonomy is to predict where a certain entity is.

Finally, we should say that until the arrival of the Internet, taxonomies were not really known by that name (except in some fields, such as, for example, Biology), being much better known as classifications. Therefore, a taxonomy is a classification.

Taxonomy Hypernym

A taxonomy is a system for organizing knowledge. There are at least four of them, and they are term lists, taxonomies, thesauri, and ontologies, in decreasing order of complexity.

What adds levels of complexity to each of the previous systems is the class of relations between terms that each one contemplates. In the lists, there is only the relation of belonging of each term to the list, in the taxonomies, the hierarchical relationship between terms is added and eventually, forwardings are added, in thesauruses, those of synonymy and concept is added to the previous ones
related.

With ontologies, there is a partial discontinuity because in ontologies the relationships are those of the conceptualization they deal with and are not predefined a priori (except in the abstract class-subclass and class-property sense).

We mention them only to complete the picture of knowledge organization systems, but attempts at their practical application run into problems due to the difficulties of their development and the need for software with the ability to perform inferences, without which they cannot be exploited.

Apply Content Classification On Websites: Check Text Classification IAB Taxonomy

The Content Taxonomy has evolved over time to provide publishers with a consistent and easy way to organize their website content. For example, to differentiate “sports” vs. “news” vs. “wellness” material. IAB Tech Lab’s Content Taxonomy specification provides additional utility for minimizing the risk that content categorization signals could generate sensitive data points about some things. Some examples are race, politics, religion, or other personal characteristics that could result in discrimination.
