User-agent is responsible for processing the instructions received by the client application, transferring them to a server; and receiving the requested data. An example of this would be a browser that retrieves a web page from a server on the Internet; and displays it to the user. To achieve this, the browser sends the server information such as the browser version; installed plugins, and other data, with which the server can evaluate the capabilities of the user agent and deliver the appropriate data to it.

The user agent transmits the information through the HTTP header
user-agent

The information that identifies the user agent goes to the web server through the HTTP request headers. Each HTTP header contains a characteristic string that servers use to identify the type of application, operating system; software vendor, or software version of the requesting user agent.

It is important to clarify that the structure and content of this information are not standard; since each developer can insert and send their own information.

Importance of user agents

Once the user agent identifies itself to the web server, a process called “content negotiation” or “content negotiation” begins. This process is a mechanism defined in HTTP that allows the offering of different versions of a document or other resources using the same URL.

In this way, browsers can specify which version of the web page best suits their capabilities through the information contained in the user agent, which in turn allows them to request the most appropriate resource for their requirements.

A classic application of this mechanism is to provide an image in GIF and PNG format and to serve the GIF version to user agents that cannot display PNG images (such as older versions of MS Internet Explorer).

Similarly, it also allows you to render different style sheets (CSS), JavaScript, or the mobile version of a web page depending on the capabilities of the browser. Other usage examples would be to deliver the requested document in the correct language; when the user agent passes the language settings, or to allow a PDF reader to access PDF documents and a media player to access videos.

The process by which an application receives content tailored to its user agent is called agent name delivery. In SEO this process can be used to present different content to user agents and other content to search engine robots. However, this is considered a black hat SEO practice known as cloaking, whereby people see a web page optimized for humans; while crawlers access different content and structure.

Such content, for the most part, is simple and optimized to rank high in the SERPs. However, search engines recognize this spam technique and often act like browsers to avoid it.
