WordPress taxonomies are really just a technique to organize posts (or other types of content) into groups. That’s it! Despite being a huge term, it is not as complicated as it first appears to be.

If you run a sports blog, for instance, you could make taxonomies for each sport (basketball, cricket, etc.) and assign the appropriate content to each taxonomy.

Taxonomies are beneficial because they make it simpler for readers to locate related content (and, as a side benefit, because they give context to your content).

Consider whether it would be beneficial to allow users to easily navigate a taxonomy to view only information related to basketball if they were visiting the sports website in the previous example and were only interested in basketball-related articles. That’s certainly preferable to their filtering out a ton of independent cricket-related stuff, don’t you think?

If you stop to think about it, you’ll see that even if you don’t call them that, taxonomies are present all over your digital existence. For instance, if you go to Amazon, you might find it useful to quickly browse the TV and video taxonomy rather than looking through the site’s millions of different products.

What Types of Taxonomies Does WordPress Support by Default?

By default, WordPress includes two types of public-facing taxonomies:

  • Categories
  • Tags

You will find these taxonomies on the right side of the WordPress editor:

It is possible to add taxonomies directly from the WordPress Editor. Or, you can always add or edit taxonomies (including slug permalinks) at a later date by hovering over the posts option in your side panel and selecting categories or tags.

What’s the Difference Between Categories and Tags?

If you look at the WordPress Editor screenshot above, you’ll notice that the interface for adding categories and tags is actually a bit different.

With categories, WordPress lists all the categories you have used, while frontend tags only include a box to add tags.

There are actually a couple of reasons for the different interfaces for each option. Let’s dig a little deeper…

First of all, every post you write needs a category. Labels, on the other hand, are totally optional. Again:

  • Category – required
  • Label –optional

Also, categories are hierarchical, while tags are not. Hierarchical just means that you can add subcategories within the top category. So you can put categories inside other categories, but you can’t do the same for tags.

Check Text Classification IAB Taxonomy

The Content Taxonomy has evolved over time to provide publishers with a consistent and easy way to organize their website content. For example, to differentiate “sports” vs. “news” vs. “wellness” material. Text Classification IAB Taxonomy specification provides additional utility for minimizing the risk that content categorization signals could generate sensitive data points about some things. Some examples are race, politics, religion, or other personal characteristics that could result in discrimination.
