Make you startup inclusive: Why is it important to include a third gender? Learn from Google

Until now, you could be like Ter and create small vignettes based on emoticons or a less artistic user and simply limit yourself to putting the “pachacho” icon to confirm that you were being ironic. But there was something we could not modify. These puppets that despite their simplicity have revolutionized communication, had not yet embraced the inclusive language. A situation that will be solved when Google releases a new batch of emojis that Unicode (formed by companies such as Google itself, Microsoft, Apple and Emojipedia) has already presented.

Visibility reaches our mobiles

We could say that the emojis have acquired a life of their own and that this depends on the use that each person wants to give them. But what was previously limited to man or woman (if we do not count the objects, animals, food …), with the next launch that Google already prepares for Android, a third way will open. The new emojis that will include a third genre will bring us new cops, zombies, superheroes, construction workers or magicians.

Although as Jennifer Daniel, director of Google Emoji says, “gender is not a haircut”, the new emoticons will play with the shape of the hair. When dealing with designs with such a negligible size, any detail becomes crucial. As pointed out by Google through Emojipedia, there are currently emojis with three variations in the genre, but the problem is that suppliers only choose men and women as the only representative way when selecting them. For example, the mythical emoticon known as “facepalm” changes from man to woman depending on whether you send it from iOS to Android.

How to use it? Learn a method

From Emojipedia ensure that this update will not affect the emojis that already have specific options for women or men, simply add a third option in some cases. To be able to use them, it will be enough to keep the emoticon in question pressed so that you can choose the desired option. The same mechanism with which we can already select the different ethnic groups that our smartphones offer.

In the image above we can see how the new designs will come to Android throughout this 2019.
