There are fewer English speakers than you think

In the world of international business, English is a must, but have you ever stopped to think about how many people use this language in other types of business?

Take for example bakers, architects, doctors, mechanics or maintenance technicians.

There are many people who are dedicated to offering products or services to local clients and who, although they have studied English, do not need it either in the profession or on a day-to-day basis.

According to the results of Eurobarometer 386, in non-Anglo-Saxon European countries:

38% of people surveyed say they speak English well enough to hold a conversation.
25% consider themselves capable of reading a newspaper or magazine article in English.
Do you still think it’s a good idea to ignore the other languages?

Even if they understand English, most prefer their mother tongue

Studies indicate that there is a big difference between being able to speak a language and doing it spontaneously.

According to the Common Sense Advisory “Can’t Read, Won’t Buy” study conducted in 10 non-English speaking countries in Europe, Asia and South America, 75% of users prefer to buy products from websites written in their native language . And that’s not all: 55% consider buying only if the page is in their language.

Even fewer perform searches in English

Most people search for information in their native language, a fact that can be verified in Google’s public data.

To get an idea of the importance of the situation, we compared the searches in the Spanish territory in two different languages for a generic keyword: “el tiempo” (in English, weather).

According to data from the Google Keyword Planner, the average number of monthly searches:

For the word “time” is 6,120,000 searches.
For the word “weather” it is 1,000,000 searches.
In other words, of all the people who want to know information about the weather, only 14% look for it in English.

It should be added that it is a known fact that people from northern European countries speak English better than those from the south. According to the EF EPI (EF English Proficiency Index), Swedes are the most proficient in this language, so we can do the same experiment for Sweden.

According to data from Google Keyword Planner (accessed 6/27/2022), average monthly searches:

For the word “väder” it is 2,700,000 searches.
For the word “weather” it is 301,000 searches.
In other words, in Sweden, only 10% of users get information about the weather conditions in English.

Obviously, these data change depending on the keyword entered, but they can help us to get an idea.

Do not limit your business to English!!
